When is the best time to take kiteboarding lessons?
NewKiteZone School is open 12 months a year! The best time for wind is November through April. During the summer the south winds arrive and we drive to the small town of La Ribera, south of Los Barriles, to find the best wind. On average, we will kite 2-3 days a week during the summer time. We offer sports packages April-November including stand-up paddle boarding, surfing, snorkeling and kayaking in addition to kiteboarding lessons. You will be sure to get on the water with NewKiteZone School!
Can I buy gear or rent kiteboarding equipment from NewKiteZone?
Absolutely! We are a dealer for both North and Cabrinha kites. After you have finished your lessons with NewKiteZone, we will put together a package price for lessons and rentals/purchase, taking a percentage of your lesson price and applying it towards equipment. We also sell Xcel and NPX wetsuits, Dakine harnesses, and North Pacific kite surfboards.
I have my own equipment, what size kites should I bring?
During the winter season the wind blow around 18-22 knots. There are days that are lighter and days that are windier. Our best guess for an 180lb person would be a 9m kite. You can also save yourself baggage fees and rent from us! We have plenty of the newest North and Cabrinha equipment for rentals.
Should I wear a wetsuit?
November and December are normally warm. You shouldn’t need anything but a rash guard during that time. January and February get a tad colder, low 70’s, and most people will wear 3/2 shorties. Then the water warms right back up, mid 70’s, during March and April.
Am I too old and out of shape to kitesurf?
NO! One of the great things about kitesurfing is people of all ages and fitness levels can do it! We tailor each and every lesson to the individual, progressing only at a speed that both the instructor and the student are comfortable with. We will make every lesson enjoyable and safe.
Do I need to make a reservation or should I just show up?
It is best to make a reservation, although, we can normally schedule you within a few days if you decide to drop in. Our busiest season is Dec 15th - Feb 1st. During this period you will want to reserve ahead of time.

We only charge you for the lessons you take. Therefore, if there is no wind during your scheduled lessons you will not be charged. It you pay in advance and do not finish your lessons, due to weather, your money will be refunded for the hours you did not take.

It can be if you do not have professional, certified instruction. Kites can generate a large amount of power and you will need lessons to learn how to control that power. Taking lessons will also make your learning process much quicker, easier, and exponentially safer!
